Colorized Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman 1943 Univ

Description

Midway through the second horror cycle started in 1938 by the rerelease of Frankenstein and Dracula, was this 1943 Universal horror that featured not only the Frankenstein monster but The Wolfman as well. If one monster was good having two was even better. Universal seeing Dracula and Frankenstein packing them in to the theatres figured why not make one film with two monsters. Well the idea worked and Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman was a smashing success. Jack Pierce was working overtime applying make up Lon Chaney Jr and Bela Lugosi as Wolfman and the Frankenstein monster. Most don't realized that Bela Lugosi was playing the Monster as being blind after Ygor's brain had been transplanted into the monster in Ghost Of Frankenstein. However the script called for the Monster to speak (so as to prove to the audience that Ygor's consciousness was now in the body of the monster) but this proved to make the monster appear almost comical with test audiences, so all dialogue was cut concerning the transplanted Ygor and we are left trying to figure out why Bela Lugosi seems to just stumble about as the Monster. The interpretation by Lugosi was destroyed and like his failed screen test in 1930 for the Monster, marked the second time he would encounter a bad career shortening experience under the monster make up.

The omission of the Monster being blind does a real disservice to Lugosi's performance and the film itself. It is interesting that Lugosi's performance of the shambling Monster with out stretched arms became the popular conception with the general public.
